"We have been pleased with the added functionality APT's new Falcon Editorial software has provided our newsroom. The install and training support we received from APT personnel was outstanding. The transition to the new software was seamless and the impact on our news operation was almost non-existent. From our APT sales rep, to the install personnel, to other support members, APT has provided first-class customer service to go along with a great product." Neal Ronquist, Publisher,
The Chronicle-Tribune
Falcon Editorial delivers ‘strategic’ content management with the ability to create print products and deliver content to complex web site. It will enable the creation, collection, assembly, staging, maintenance and delivery, of text, graphics, audio and visual content to multiple physical and virtual products. The system is effective across multiple channels; it is dynamic and, most importantly, its media neutral. The Falcon Editorial content management system offers a variety of ways to manage and distribute content to print and new media publishing platforms in the high-volume, fast-paced environment of today’s publishing organizations.
- Allows users to concentrate on content not technology.
- Users submit content, review, edit and approve it using their favorite industry standard tools such as Word¨, CopyDesk¨ or InCopy¨.
- Tracks content status using extensive versioning control.
- Adaptable workflow and allows users have accessed from multiple locations.
- Content is cross-platform and media neutral.
- Automatically schedules the posting, expiration and archiving of content.
Falcon Editorial accepts and manages virtually any type of content in its native format, including text, pictures, sound, video, etc. Each editorial user can choose their favorite application (e.g. Microsoft¨ Word¨, QuarkXPress¨, InDesign¨, etc.) to submit, review and edit content that resides within the database. We support the users working on Mac OS X. (University of Missouri is doing this) We can also support a mixed environment of Mac OSX and Windows (Olympia is doing this).
Falcon has a new messaging system, allowing conversations to groups of people or individuals, even automated messages and messages 'attached' to pages.
Falcon Editorial recognizes that publishers have different, sometimes unique, metadata requirements. It also acknowledges that different types of files have their own metadata requirements. Falcon Editorial is designed to support custom metadata.
Every version of a content item is related to the current revision. When a new version of the item is generated, the previous revision becomes “read-only”; users are allowed to read the content if required.
Auditing captures a history of the actions applied to a content item. Users may request an audit trail at any time. This audit trail is a list of all the actions applied to the item, along with the date and time stamp and user responsible for the action.
The QManager provides a simple way to organize the workflow and queue structure presented to the various user groups. Each user group only sees necessary or authorized queues. The queue structure may be designed differently for each user group. This provides an efficient, clear interface for each task in the newspaper production process. Stories are moved through their assigned workflow by simply selecting the Next or Previous button.
New staff members can be operational on the system with a minimum of training.
In the world of print production different solutions are needed to meet the markets needs Falcon Editorial supports both Macintosh¨ OSX and Microsoft¨, Quark XPress¨ with CopyDesk¨ and Adobe InDesign¨ with InCopy¨ and Word¨.
Falcon Editorial separates form from content making it easy to publish a single piece of content to multiple web sites without creating multiple copies of the content. This is accomplished while maintaining the unique style of each site that receives the content. The ability to export data in XML, HTML, ASCII or a delimited format that allows for easy syndication, formatting, personalization and archiving.
Using Falcon Editorial for Publishing directly to your web servers The system manages files and file structure directly on web servers, including MS IIS, Apache and Xitami. It can be wholly responsible for the formatting, scheduling and ultimate destination of the content.
Unlike many existing systems that break their link to the content upon publication, Falcon Editorial will continue to manage the content throughout its lifecycle. If the story is updated in the system, it is republished. If the content expires, it and all of its related components, such as photos, etc. are removed from the server, or moved to the archive server.
Scheduling of web content is important for several reasons; Content is not relevant until a particular point in time. Conversely, it may be important to remove a piece of content from the web site on a particular day, at a particular time such as in the case of a television listings page. Similarly, the publication rights to an article may have been purchased for a finite period of time, in which case it is crucial to be able to control exactly how long a story is published.
Interfacing Falcon Editorial with Third-Party Applications Servers The system also works with third party application servers that provide personalization, access to legacy system data, e-commerce systems, etc. In this case, Falcon Editorial will supply content to the application server.
Third party application servers are used for functions such as authoring, template creation, personalization, publishing and delivery. In today’s environment, content management systems will be evaluated on their ability to manage and distribute content to multiple channels. Features like personalization, commerce and web site management reside on the application and web server.
In such a model, the system supplies content in a variety of forms to the application or web server. Once the content is pushed to either of these servers (depending on the architecture), it is the responsibility of that server to display it.
Return on Investment Falcon Editorial provides a return on investment that result from the complete management of any type of workflow and its single database for various types of content. The system eliminates the current need for separate, distinctive workflows and databases to accommodate different operations and types of content. This reduces or eliminates the need for separate and redundant staff to handle content. Falcon Editorial eliminates the need to pay two or three times over for the same information and branding to be repurposed. The system works seamlessly across all media, content types and business processes saving time and money.
